Lyrics

Honey you don’t know my mind I’m lonesome all the time Born to lose a drifter that’s me You can travel for so long then a rambler’s heart goes wrong Baby you don’t know my mind today Heard the music of a rail slept in every old dirty jail And life’s too short for you to worry me When I find I can’t win I’ll be checking out again Baby you don’t know my mind today I’ve been a hobo and a tramp my soul has done been stamped Lord things I know I learned the hard hard way I ain’t here to judge or plea but to give my poor heart ease Baby you don’t know my mind today Honey you don’t know my mind I’m lonesome all the time Born to lose a drifter that’s me You say I’m sweet and kind I can love you a thousand times Baby you don’t know my mind today

About This Song

Honey, You Don't Know My Mind was written by Jimmie Skinner, the Kentucky-born country and bluegrass singer and songwriter. He made the first recording of it in 1950, under the title "You Don't Know My Mind."

The bluegrass version most people know is Jimmy Martin's. When Martin recorded it again with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on Will the Circle Be Unbroken (1972), that album reached a lot of players who'd never heard the earlier record, so for many people the Circle recording is where they learned it.

Year Artist Notes
1950 Jimmie Skinner
1960 Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys J.D. Crowe on banjo, Paul Williams on mandolin
1972 Jimmy Martin with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Vassar Clements on fiddle

The verse in the chart is nine bars long. The extra bar of the 1 at the end makes the verse one bar longer than you might expect, so give it that bar before the next verse starts.
