I Like Train Songs
Jam-Along Backing Track
Lyrics
Some folks are writin' love songs and songs about a girl
Some are writin' all about the endin' of the world
Some like songs of happiness and some of times of pain
You can keep 'em all, I like my songs about a train
I'm on a choo-choo rollin'
Never comin' back
On the choo-choo rollin'
That's my kind of track
Well, I don't mind a story of a man that's been through hell
If he's an engineer and reachin' up to ring the bell
I can take a sacred song that's serious and slow
As long as in between the lines, I hear the whistle blow
Well, I heard about a man whose broken heart was torn in two
And everybody's got a protest song for you-know-who
Well, you can keep them barroom ditties stuck inside your brain
The only thing that clears 'em out is songs about a train
You can spike the foot ball or you can spike the punch
Burn right through your paycheck on a four-martini lunch
Pourin' top-shelf liquor, might as well be cheap champagne
That don't wet my whistle like a song about a train
I could live without a stanza 'bout some roses bein' red
And violets are just flowers when they're shriveled up and dead
Well, I need more murder ballad like a bullet to the brain
But I still make my livin' singin' songs about a trainAbout This Song
I Like Train Songs is a Billy Strings original. It's credited to William Apostol, which is his given name. The song is on So Much for Goodbyes, his fifth studio album, which came out on Reprise on August 28, 2026. He co-produced the album with T Bone Burnett. The song is brand new, so that album track is the recording to learn it from. He first played it live the day the album came out, at the Ionia County Fairgrounds in Michigan.
The chorus in the chart above is five bars long, not the usual four or eight, so keep count when you get to its last bar.
