On and On was written by Bill Monroe. He recorded it with his Blue Grass Boys at a January 1954 session in Nashville, but it was held back until 1956, when it came out as a single backed with "I Believed in You Darling." Ten years later it was included on the album The High, Lonesome Sound of Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys, and Monroe's own recording is still the place to start.
