About This Song
Out on the Ocean is a traditional Irish double jig in G. Its history goes back at least to the mid-1800s. Collector George Petrie wrote it down as "The Bucks of Ahasnagh," and James Goodman, a Cork uilleann piper and Church of Ireland clergyman, put a version in his manuscript as "The Tithes Are All Down." Since then it has picked up a long list of other names, including "Across the Sea," "Clare Jig" and the joke title "O'Connell's Jig on Top of Mount Everest." It's a favorite in Irish sessions, especially with people still learning the repertoire. It's often paired with The Kesh, The Lilting Banshee or The Carraroe.
